BONE AUGMENTATION BY PERIOSTEUM EXTENSION USING 3-DIMENSIONAL MEMORY NICKEL-TITANIUM MESH SHEETS

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of bone augmentation by periosteum extension using 3-dimensional memory nickel-titanium mesh sheets in rabbit nasal bone.
Materials and methods. Twenty four rabbits (aged 12-16 weeks; 2.5-3.0 kg) were used in this study. In the experimental group, the 3-dimensional memory nickel-titanium mesh sheet was inserted under the periosteal membrane and kept in place for 3 weeks using a screw. The screw was then removed and the mesh recovered its shape gradually. In the control group, the mesh was kept inserted under the periosteal membrane. Four animals were sacrificed in each period in both groups at 6, 9 and 11 weeks postoperative. The carcasses were prepared for immunological assessment and histological assessment. The bone area and expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) were evaluated.
Results. Bone ratio and bone area were significantly higher in the experimental group higher values than the control group after 9 and 11 weeks (P=0.0337, P=0.0027). Monoclonal anti-BMP-2 antibody stained cell number was significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group after 6 weeks (P=0.0001).
Conclusion. The results suggested that periosteum extension using a 3-dimensional shape memory nickel-titanium mesh sheet will likely induce new bone regeneration more than a titanium mesh sheet.
